ERM

Case Study: CIC Energy

Business challenge
Conducting environmental, social and health impact assessment to ensure proposed energy project meets IFC standards in Botswana

Background
CIC Energy appointed ERM to undertake an Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) for a mine mouth coal-fired power plant that will be built in two stages each of 2700 MW gross output in southern Botswana. The project includes the development of the coal mine both strip mining and underground, together with the associated infrastructure to support the development of transmission lines, ground water wellfields and a new water pipeline.

Role
ERM’s understanding of the application of the new IFC Equator Principles coupled with our standing with the International Lenders community, were key factors in being appointed to lead and manage this multi-billion dollar project.

Benefit
Key concerns addressed in the project include air emissions, water use and efficiency, community health and will include resettlement action plans as well as social and labor plans.  Specialized input is being provided by ERM’s Hong Kong, UK and North America's Washington teams.  The groundwater team is also evaluating groundwater impacts and undertaking extensive modeling studies.
