Sectoral approaches and their role in NAMAs – where next?
“Member companies of the WBCSD Cement Sustainability Initiative completed this year a study on the impacts of different carbon policies on potential emissions reductions, global trade and regional market shares in the cement sector. The study concluded that a sector-based analysis of the problem, often called a Sectoral Approach, represents an effective policy option to achieve greater speed and scale in climate mitigation, while not limiting economic growth in developing countries.
The panel will review the findings of the Sectoral Approach study and will discuss the future implications for the design of a Sectoral Approach, such as what needs to be defined at international vs. national level (the “fit” with NAMAs), how to design an effective sectoral crediting system and how to tackle carbon leakage, among others.”
