We are focused on improving our safety performance through monitoring key indicators, holding leaders accountable and empowering all employees.
We track a number of companywide indicators, which help us identify improvement opportunities for our approach and processes at a local, regional and global level. These indicators are shared with our employees, managers, Partners, the Executive Committee and our Board in a thorough and timely manner. ERM business units also integrate health and safety performance goals into their operational plans as part of our Safety Management System.
ERM Partners and other leaders have personal safety goals included in their performance metrics, with progress against these goals assessed as part of the performance review process.
Despite significant focus on safety across the organization, ERM experienced 18 recordable incidents during FY16 (i.e., incidents that resulted in injury or illness to an ERM employee that required professional medical attention to resolve). These incidents resulted in a total recordable incident rate (TRIR) of 0.41, a decrease over the FY15 rate of 0.54. Our rolling three-year TRIR average decreased in FY16, from 0.49 to 0.47. Injuries related to employees being “hit by” (an object) were the most common type of recordable incident experienced by our employees during FY16.
During FY17, we are renewing our focus on active leadership to improve our safety performance. This includes the implementation of a global Active Leadership Audit Program designed to improve situational awareness and reward direct engagement in our program by both Partners and senior staff.
ERM’s Safety Management System is based on the OHSAS and ISO international standards. In certain markets, we seek external certification of our own health, safety, environmental and quality systems where it makes business sense to offer this globally recognized mark of achievement.
In particular, 14 of our offices have achieved certification to the OHSAS 18001 health and safety standard, 23 offices are certified to the ISO 14001 environmental standard and 36 are certified to the ISO 9001 quality standard. These offices are located in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom.
