It was early on that Jannis knew he wanted to play a role in creating a fossil-free future. He’d earned his degrees in economics and politics. He’d gained experience through a series of internships across sustainability and consulting. His path was set: it was through the economic transition that he was going to make his mark.
The first step on that path was with a start-up dealing with green-house gas accounting software, working with clients to calculate and reduce their carbon footprint. It was a good start, but it didn’t last. “When the company closed down in late 2022, ERM took the chance to hire 25 of us and create their own Carbon Digital Hub. It gave me the chance to continue in the same area but also dive much deeper – a chance to have meaningful impact AND grow my expertise in a unique way.”
As part of this new Carbon Digital Hub, now an integral part of the Central Europe ESG Advisory Team, Jannis and his team help clients across a wide range of sectors quantify their footprint, identify decarbonization levers and develop a roadmap for making reductions year on year. Tackling decarbonization projects through a digital lens, the team might employ ERM’s in-house solutions like the Net Zero Compass or help clients find the best-fit external software to meet their needs. One such project saw the team tackle a client’s supply chain – decarbonising the procurement processes to align to their sustainability policies and goals, then providing a range of training sessions for all the relevant stakeholders.
“As a Consultant, my role comes down to creating the right outcome for clients – from doing the research and summarizing the findings, to brainstorming ideas and presenting our solutions, it’s all about delivering value. Here, how much responsibility you have comes down to how much direct client interaction you’re comfortable with. Put simply – the more you engage, the more impact you make.”
He’s been part of ERM for less than a year that, but it’s clear he and his colleagues in the ESG Advisory Team are already making a significant difference and a positive imprint on the planet. And what does he put that down to? “It’s the people here that make such a difference! Since joining, everyone I’ve met has been both personally supportive and professionally impressive. The expertise in the company, across all sorts of specialisms and sectors, is remarkable.”
