ERM at PDAC 2018: Finding Success in a Changing World

4 - 7 March 2018

Finding Success in a Changing World - What Does Sustainable Mining Mean to You?

Changing global geo-political and economic conditions have resulted in uncertainty for the resource sector over the last few years. While there is now a better balance between the supply and demand of commodities as we return to growth mode, there is pressure for mining companies to remain competitive in an ever-changing world. Today, companies embrace sustainable business practices that help attract new workers, embrace technology, mitigate environmental impact, support communities and drive regulatory transparency.

ERM Panel Session (PDAC Presentation Room): Sustainable Mining - Is it Good Business?
Tuesday March 6, 2:00 pm to 4:00pm, Room 202B (North Building)

What was seen as leading practice in sustainability five years ago is now considered the minimum standard of corporate responsibility in the mining sector. Stakeholder and shareholder expectations are rapidly increasing as a result of global economic, social, and political trends. Leading companies are continuously striving to anticipate and address these changes in order to remain at the forefront of the sustainable mining movement. But for companies to invest significantly in sustainability policy, and ensure that a commitment to sustainability practice is made from site to corporate, a question must be asked and answered: is sustainable mining good business?

Through a panel discussion with industry leaders and specialists from the finance sector, ERM will look at:

  • How the concept and practice of sustainable mining continues to evolve and what it means today to a company’s bottom line.
  • What sustainable mining looks like at key stages in the mineral development cycle – including exploration and mine closure
  • How practices must evolve to ensure a return on investment and stakeholder’s increasing expectations.

ERM’s panelists will share their perspectives on the current state of sustainable mining, with examples of the technological and performance innovation their companies have applied. The session will be moderated be Louise Pearce, Global Managing Partner for the mining sector at ERM and feature the following panelists.

  • Tom Albanese, Former CEO of Rio Tinto and Vedanta
  • Elaine Dorward-King, Executive Vice President of Sustainability & External Relations, Newmont
  • Jeff Hanman, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Teck
  • Scott Yarrow, Vice President, Sustainability, Glencore

Attendees will be invited to join ERM and the panelists for a cocktail reception following the discussion.
