ERM at the Piper 25 conference

17 May 2013

ERM will be presenting papers at Piper 25 – a conference reflecting on the lessons learnt from the Piper Alpha tragedy, reviewing how far offshore safety has evolved since, and to reinforce industry commitment to continuous improvement.

This major offshore safety conference marks the 25th anniversary of the North Sea oil production platform explosion – a tragic event that changed the way in which safety was looked at in oil, gas and other hazardous environments around the world. Organised by Oil & Gas UK, the leading representative body for the UK offshore oil and gas industry, over 500 people from across the sector will come together to explore broader safety issues during the event which runs from 18-20 June.  ERM’s papers include:

  • Safety Case – A Living Document: producing safety cases that drive performance in asset integrity, process safety culture, human factors and technical risk management
    Presented by Rachel Bennett and Martyn Ramsden, a Principal Consultant and Technical Director respectively with ERM’s Global Risk service

  • HSE Auditing: Are We Looking at the Right Things in the Right Places?
    Presented by Megan Thomas, a Partner with ERM’s Performance and Assurance service

  • Including Human Failure in Bowtie Diagrams facilitates holistic process safety management
    Presented by Ian Hamilton, the Partner leading on ERM’s Human Factors offering

The keynote speaker at the event is Lord Cullen, who chaired the public inquiry into the disaster. Lord Cullen’s report made 106 recommendations which have since transformed the way safety is managed offshore – to the point where the UK regime is now regarded as a global exemplar. Other high profile international speakers at the event include:

  • Judith Hackitt CBE (Chair, UK Health and Safety Executive);
  • Bob Fryar (EVP for Safety and Operational Risk, BP);
  • Jane Cutler (Chief Executive Officer, National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA)) and;
  • Miranda Taylor (Director - Environment, Safety& Production, Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association Limited (APPEA)
