Energy efficiency through technology

London, UK

ERM's internal IT function has helped ERM to reduce our energy use and related GHG emissions by consolidating servers and virtualizing systems. ERM operates two data centers that are in a secured hosting facility provided by a third party.

A significant proportion of the equipment in each data center is server-based technology which is used to provide global services to ERM and clients. Traditionally, these have been separate individual units, each requiring physical housing, components and disks – each unit consuming power individually with associated heat generation. By taking advantage of the virtualization technologies, ERM is now able to operate multiple virtual servers in fewer higher-performance server hosts. This requires fewer components and materials, which consume less power and produce less heat than separate units.

Both of the data centers are in locations with a temperate climate, thereby minimizing the need for cooling/heating.
